How to computerize a library in India
Computerizing a library takes six steps: pick web-based library software, define your catalogue structure, enter stock with accession numbers (barcode scanning optional), register members with plans and limits, move issue/return to the software desk, then switch on the public OPAC and automated reminders. A small library can finish in days, not months.
Steps 1–2: software and structure
Choose browser-based software so there's no server to buy or maintain — try before deciding (Flocci Library POS provisions a free sample-data demo in about a minute). Then decide catalogue conventions: accession number format, shelf naming, genres. Consistency here pays forever.
Steps 3–4: stock and members
Enter titles once, then copies with accession numbers, condition grades and shelf locations — a few thousand books is a shared week's work, and a USB barcode scanner speeds it further. Register members under plans (student, regular, senior, daily pass) so borrow limits enforce themselves.
Steps 5–6: go live and extend
Pick a Monday: from then on every issue and return goes through the desk, and the paper register stops. Once circulation is digital, the free wins follow — share the public OPAC link, turn on WhatsApp/SMS due-date reminders, and let fines compute automatically.
Frequently asked questions
How long does computerizing a small library take?
With web-based software, a 2,000–5,000 book library typically needs a few days of catalogue entry plus a one-day circulation switch. The demo-to-live path in Flocci is self-serve.
Do we need to buy a server or special hardware?
No — browser-based systems need only an existing computer or tablet and an internet connection. A USB barcode scanner is a convenience, not a requirement.
What about our existing paper records?
The accession register maps directly to per-copy catalogue entry; old loan history can simply age out — start clean from go-live day, which is what most small libraries do.
